Marijcke Keli’i Wahine Noho Ike Anuenue Christianson (ma-ray-ka) was born on the island of Oahu in May of 1955 and grew up at the base of the Ko’olau Mountains in Kaneohe. She started drawing as a child as soon as she was able to pick up a pencil and has been drawing ever since. After high school she went to study art at the Museum Art School in Portland Oregon and then at the Art Center in L.A. California. Returning to Hawaii in 1978, she graduated from the University of Hawaii with a B.F.A in drawing and printmaking, continuing into graduate studies there as well. Her work has been presented in a wide variety of shows over the last 25 years, and she has been featured in three solo exhibitions. In 2003, she took her work to the East Coast, and over the two years spent there, she showed in a number of exhibitions in Pennsylvania. To date, she is still represented by the Lynden Gallery in Elizabethtown, PA. She was a visiting artist at Elizabethtown College and conducted a figure drawing and painting class with the art professor there. Her forte is drawing the nude figure which she has been doing for over 20 years.  She now lives on the windward side of Oahu where her heart is.

Curator's note:  Marijcke draws her images with charcoal taped to the end of a two foot piece of bamboo.  This allows her to sketch the larger pictures especially (click on Hiiaka and Pele, below) without having to use a ladder, working the image while simultaneously viewing the entire piece.  Marijcke's excellent results, of course, speak for themselves. And if this sounds easy, try it sometime.

Artist's statement:

I love to draw. For me the drawing is a final and complete work of art, not just a sketch for a painting or a sculpture. I am inspired by the beauty and spirit of the human form, horses, my Hawaiian Island home and the power of the Universe. The Elements, the Human Condition, and that unnamable Life Force which compels us to traverse that High Deep Space …. that is what my Art is about
